The Art of Conversation

Helpful Instruction on The Art of Conversation

A few pointers on how to hone your patter by doyenne of decorum, and notorious lush, Lady Seraphina von Himmelblau. Take heed.

Silence can be golden you know

The power of preserving silence is the very first requisite to all who wish to shine and requires great genius.

Ahem…there’s no need to shout

Plato once said the empty vessel makes the loudest sound. If people are wincing, perhaps lower your voice.

Oversharing can be a bit inelegant

One really must ensure that disclosure isn’t a compulsion. Graphic details can put others off their meal.

Parading your knowledge is the height of ill-breeding

You may well be very clever indeed, but trying to appear hyper intellectual will win you no friends.

For heaven’s sake don’t drone on

Personal passions of yours may be less scintillating to everyone else. Are they nodding off? It’s a clue.

Appear to be captivated at all times

No matter how dreary or tiresome your companion, one must always look spellbound by their every word.

Choose topics heedlessly at your peril

Approach sex, religion, politics and money with caution…a rancorous quarrel can swiftly ruin your evening.

Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues

The aloof reveal two things…a high opinion of themselves, and a low opinion of those around them.

Above all else:

The great charm of delightful dialogue consists less in the display of one’s own wit and intelligence, than in the power to draw forth the contributions of others; anyone who leaves you after a long conversation, pleased with themself and the part they have played in the discourse, will be your warmest admirer.
